Days and Hours Open

Due to COVID-19, the Foundation will be focusing on non-traditional experiences for the 2020 season.  While the Museum is closed to the public, we are excited to work on other ways to share our love of local history such as Virtual Tours and Outdoor Exhibit experiences.

Parking

In addition to the two spaces on Museum property, ample parking is generally available in the adjacent Lees-McRae athletic facility lot, adjacent to the museum. There is also parking just a short walk away at the Mill Pond.

Accessibility

The ground floor is accessible to those with limited mobility. Tours may be altered to accommodate those who are unable to stand for long periods.  Please call 828.898.3634 during Museum hours or email us anytime to discuss how we may accommodate your needs.

Getting Here

Map

From the Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce:
Follow NC 184 south for approximately one mile and turn right on Hickory Nut Gap Road. After you cross the bridge at the beginning of the road, you will see the museum on your left.

From the Avery County Chamber of Commerce:
Take NC 184 north for four miles. Turn left on Hickory Nut Gap Road. After you cross the bridge at the beginning of the road, you will see the museum on your left.

Walking on the Banner Elk Greenway from Banner Elk’s Tate-Evans Park:
Follow the greenway through the park and over the bridge towards Shawneehaw Avenue/Highway 184. Follow the sidewalk to the left along Shawneehaw Avenue/Highway 184 past the Mill Pond. Cross the street at the end of the sidewalk  and follow the boardwalk along the Mill Pond to the left of the red Historic Cheese House.  Turn right onto Hickory Nut Gap Road and you will see the museum on your left.
